Ambidexterity and Discovery.
Ambidexterity is the state of being equally adept in the use of both right and left appendages (such as the hands). It is one of the most famous varieties of cross-dominance. (wikipedia)
My interest for Ambidexterity started when I saw a Project Runway Contestant (Elisa Jimenez from Season 4) who can only write backwards. She always idolized Leonardo Da Vinci and thought that it would be fun to learn how to write backwards just like him. After knowing that a person can actually learn and do this skill, I immediately googled some interesting facts about Da Vinci and learned that he writes backwards, probably dyslexic and he is ambidextrous – he can actually write with his left hand and paint with the other one, he usually uses both hands for painting, switching to the other hand when the other is tired. And I was really really amazed that there are people who can really use both hands in writing and other complicated activities, so I started practicing my non-dominant hand (left) and in a few months time, I hope i’ll be one of them. It’ll be cool to learn how to write with both hands, isn’t it? It can be really useful and it is an advantage. =)
So I started writing in my new journal (notebook) using my left hand, not only does it help me practice my non dominant hand but i didn’t know that it can also help me discover myself in a new way. It has been years since I wrote in a journal, I must say that it is very helpful to let your feelings out and just scribble thoughts away. I wrote about future goals, past experiences, kilig moments, emo times, wonderful moments, present happenings and through writing it in a paper and thinking about these things, I saw things in a clearer point of view. Yes, it may take me a couple of hours writing in my journal ~ I didn’t know that writing with my left hand can be such a pain in the hand – and in the butt. >.< (it would take me about 5 minutes just to write a single short sentence) but I know that it’s all worth it, at least I can write things I want and I know that someday, I’ll be ambidextrous. ^___^ (confident much? oh well, let’s look at the brighter side – I learned that ambidexterity is not actually genetic and the use of both hands can be learned by being patient and by practicing, practicing, and practicing)
